Every day in school matters. Being present, on time, and ready to learn helps students keep up academically and stay connected to school.

A student is considered chronically absent when they miss 10% or more of the school year. This includes both excused and unexcused absences.
Why It Matters
PPSD policy notes that chronic absence can hurt literacy development, reduce learning time, and create patterns that are harder to fix later in the year.
School Support
When attendance becomes a concern, schools work with families through outreach, support teams, and attendance plans to help students get back on track.
What counts as an excused absence?
Examples include illness, death in the family, medical appointments that cannot happen outside school hours, family emergencies, religious holidays, court appointments, counseling appointments, and school-sponsored events. Documentation may be required.
What counts as an unexcused absence?
Examples include family vacations, employment issues, cutting class, off-campus activities not sponsored by school, and unexcused early dismissals.
When should families contact school?
Contact the school as soon as you know your child will be absent. Keep phone numbers and contact information updated, and check Skyward regularly for attendance updates.
